HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- At Tully Stadium on Nov. 6, Northbrook High School did something that's never been done in the school's 52-year history: they qualified for the playoffs, and the celebration was a long-time coming.
"History, 52 years of frustration for everyone that has come before us, this one's for them," Head Coach Demond Stafford said.
The 35-0 win over Sam Houston Math, Science and Technology Center (formerly known as Sam Houston High School) gives the Raiders their first winning season since 1993.
Over the years, the Raiders have been counted out and overlooked, but this was their moment to shine. "That grind, right now, that has paid off and shows we represent the 'tough people win' mentality," senior captain Guillermo Macias said.
"After I graduated, I was part of the team that made the playoffs for the first time; that's what means so much to us," senior Hary Mejia said.
"I've been playing football for 4 years now; this is one of the best feelings ever. I'm so proud of my team," senior offensive lineman Cande Banda said.
The Raiders will have to wait to see who they face in the playoffs, but that doesn't matter right now. "The vibes right now are up the roof, to the sky, better than ever," senior captain Kenneth Paulk said.
Coach Stafford might need to extend the 24-hour rule and enjoy this historic win a little longer before they prepare for the 1st round of the playoffs. "I'm proud that these kids get a chance to stand in the sun," Coach Stafford said. "I love to see kids that have been counted out get it done."
