Mother of boy who shot teen to remain in jail
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A judge decided to keep Elaina Gomez-Villeda in jail after police said her 10-year-old son got a gun and fatally shot a teenage girl.
Albuquerque police arrested 40-year-old Gomez-Villeda for her role in the October 31 death of Keinerlein Rangel, who was 16 years old.
Gomez-Villeda faced a judge Friday morning. The judge said she poses a threat to the community and ordered her held in jail until trial.
Police said Gomez-Villeda told her son to get a gun while she argued with Rangel’s mother about loud music on Halloween.
APD said several people started arguing shortly after 6 p.m. on Halloween outside an apartment complex near Tennessee Street. Police said the argument turned into a physical fight.
Police said the 10-year-old boy tried to pull his mother away but could not. Police said he then went inside an apartment and came back with a handgun.
Police said one shot hit Rangel and she died at the scene. Police said Gomez-Villeda then took her son into a nearby apartment and called police.
APD said officers heard one gunshot inside Gomez-Villeda’s apartment as they arrived. Officers took cover while several people came out of the apartment.
Police said Gomez-Villeda came out armed with a handgun and one officer fired a handgun. Police said that shot did not hit anyone and nobody suffered injuries.
Police said Gomez-Villeda then dropped the handgun and surrendered.
