Activists staged a mock funeral procession Friday in Williston to protest the presence of two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in Vermont. Local clergy carried cardboard coffins past the entrance to ICE’s National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center during a march from there to the agency’s Law Enforcement Support Center, a distance of about 1¼ miles.
The protesters aimed to call attention to the “human cost of this system,” according to organizer Paul Markowitz. In a news release, organizers said they have identified 102 people who died directly as a result of ICE enforcement actions or while in ICE custody since January 2025.
Friday’s event was coordinated by the ICE Out Vermont Alliance, which describes itself as a statewide coalition of community, faith-based and activist organizations.
VTDigger photographer Glenn Russell was in Williston and captured the scene.
