A major road rehabilitation project along Kapiolani Boulevard is scheduled to begin Monday morning.

Work will take place on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., except holidays, along Kapiolani Boulevard between Ward Avenue and Atkinson Drive. The project is expected to last about 18 months, according to the Honolulu Department of Design and Construction.

During construction, motorists should expect periodic lane closures and traffic delays.

The contractor will maintain at least one lane open in each direction at all times, though the total number of closed lanes may vary depending on the work being conducted.

The $9.9 million contract, awarded to Hiilawe Construction LLC, includes replacing existing asphalt pavement as well as installing new concrete curbs, gutters and sidewalks along Kapiolani Boulevard.

Additional work includes adjusting manhole covers and utility boxes, installing traffic signals and vehicle loop detectors, updating pavement striping and signage, and trimming trees.

Construction will initially occur during daytime hours but may transition to night work during later phases.

City officials advise motorists to allow for extra travel time and follow all posted signs, traffic control devices and instructions from special-duty police officers in the work zone.
