Bishop Gorman celebrates Senior Night with shutout win over CIVICA
The celebration of a 54-0 Senior Night victory at Bishop Gorman quickly turned to concern when CIVICA freshman quarterback Stacey Monroe was injured at the end of a play and did not get up with 3:16 left in the fourth quarter Friday night at Fertitta Field.
After a lengthy pause, paramedics arrived and placed Monroe on a spinal board before transporting him across the field and into an ambulance.
After the game, which ended after an agreed-upon stoppage in play, Gaels coach Brent Browner addressed the frightening incident.
“Player safety is important for everybody,” Browner said. “I think everything we do here is that, from every piece of equipment we buy there is a padding underneath the field that nobody knows is even under there.
“That is to make sure (the players) are all safe. Things are going to happen no matter what but I think obviously our staff did a great job on taking care of that piece and making sure he was OK.”
In the game, Bishop Gorman collected its seventh consecutive win and remained atop the Nevada Division 5A standings with a 9-1 record.
The victory marked the program’s seventh win at Fertitta Field, where the Gaels remained undefeated this season. Over their past five home games, Gorman has outscored opponents 266-13, recording 34 touchdowns.
Starting quarterback Ace Amina completed all seven of his pass attempts for 149 yards and two touchdowns before being replaced after the Gaels took a 28-0 lead on their first possession of the second quarter.
Backup quarterback Brody Amina, the younger of the Amina brothers, totaled 93 yards and two touchdowns after taking over. That included a 53-yard touchdown pass on the first play of Gorman’s final first-half possession, giving the Gaels a 41-0 halftime lead.
Senior wide receiver Aizen Costales-Torres added 52 yards on three receptions, including two touchdown catches, bringing his season total to four.
“Obviously, Senior Night is a great night for guys that haven’t played a lot so a lot of those guys got time which is amazing,” Browner said. “I thought one of the most impressive parts was watching some of the guys who start a lot humble themselves and not be worried about ‘me, me, me,’ so I thought it was pretty cool.”
