What makes this photo important?
U.S. Sen.-elect Juliana Stratton won the race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin on Tuesday, and Illinois became the first state in U.S. history that will have two women of color serving simultaneously in the Senate. Diversity and representation in politics matters. Full stop.
How I got this photo:
My brain almost exploded when the event's lighting engineers did not — or could not — put a spotlight on Stratton when she first walked on stage Tuesday at her election night party. With a giant LED screen behind her, Stratton was celebrating with supporters after declaring victory over the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate. Stratton was backlit, almost completely silhouetted, for an instant. And that moment was arguably one of the most important images of the night, for one of the most important midterm election races of the state. But, photojournalists have to roll with the punches and, despite my initial knee-jerk frustration, the image from that time nonetheless highlighted in blue the wave of Democratic wins that would mark the night.
