Sources confirm death of former Shelby Co. Judge Melissa Boyd

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Former Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Melissa Boyd has died, sources confirm.

Tennessee State Representative Torrey Harris wrote a social media post regarding her passing Saturday. In the post, Harris recounted a recent heartwarming reunion with Boyd while standing in line at the polls for Election Day.

“It was so good to see her, I had not seen her in a while,” Rep. Harris wrote. “Never did it cross my mind that would be the last time we spoke as she cast her own ballot.”

Boyd’s niece, Andrea McKee, also confirmed Boyd’s passing in a social media post Friday.

“Melissa was a special part of my life and our whole family,” she wrote. “Her love, her laughter, and the way she cared for the people around her will stay with us always. Losing her leaves a hole that can’t be filled, but I’m so grateful for the time we had with her.”

Boyd was elected as a Shelby County Criminal Court judge in 2022.

Boyd resigned from her position as Criminal Court judge in April 2024, a few months after she was suspended for soliciting resources and cash donations on Facebook to benefit a school, along with her conduct during the investigation.

At that time, Boyd admitted to having a drug problem.

Boyd was also facing an indictment for coercion of a witness and harassment.

She entered a guilty plea and was ordered into rehab one day after her resignation as judge. A few months later, in August 2024, Boyd was back behind bars after a judge ordered that diversion be terminated.

“Her life was one of service, having served our country as a military veteran and our community through the justice system,” Rep. Harris said in his social media statement. “She broke barriers, made history, and leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond any one chapter of her life...

“Her passing is a reminder that we should always lead with grace, compassion, and an understanding that everyone faces battles we may know nothing about. May we remember her for the totality of her life and contributions. My condolences and prayers are with her family, friends, and loved ones during this time. May she rest in peace. ”
