Santa Fe man charged with aggravated assault, shooting at VFW Post
SANTA FE, N.M. – Santa Fe police arrested a 44-year-old man after they said he fired at VFW Post #2951 following a dispute and no one was hurt.
Santa Fe police said officers got multiple ShotSpotter alerts near Sandoval Street and Montezuma Avenue at about 11:56 p.m. on Nov. 6. The Santa Fe Regional Emergency Communication Center also got calls about a man firing a gun at the VFW at 307 Montezuma Avenue.
Police said officers found Carlos Joaquin Behrend Ramirez in a rear alley during the first response and took him into custody without incident.
Officers spoke with witnesses and found no injuries. Police said early information shows Ramirez got upset after a dispute over a pool game and a song being changed.
Police said Ramirez left the VFW, came back a short time later with a gun and fired into the business after someone denied him reentry. They said another person then drew a gun and fired at Ramirez before he ran away.
The discharge of both guns remains under investigation, police said. Detectives and the Crime Scene Unit processed the scene for evidence and also got a search warrant for Ramirez’s home.
Police said investigators found and seized a firearm and spent shell casings at the home. Ramirez was booked into the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and shooting at an occupied dwelling.
The case remains under active investigation and Santa Fe police said they will release more information as it becomes available.
