Why New Mexico lawns still need water this winter, even after rain
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Recent rain has helped New Mexico yards recover from a hot summer, but experts say homeowners still need to water plants through winter.
Recent rainfall brought needed moisture after an extremely hot summer, but New Mexico’s climate still requires ongoing yard care.
Jennifer Hobson, owner of Jericho Nursery, said the added moisture is also bringing out more weeds.
Hobson recommends watering new landscaping about once a week during the winter. She said plants that have been in the ground for three to five years need water about every couple of weeks.
“We don’t get enough snowpack here to really be sufficient, and we might get more rain which would be super, but it’s going to be in bursts, and it’s going to come and go quickly,” Hobson said. “The glory to this time of year is it stays wetter longer in on the ground because it’s cool and it doesn’t just you know evaporate, so that’s a glory.”
Hobson said homeowners should watch their landscaping closely and not assume rain will do all the work through the winter.
