Chicago-area skydiver dies after mid-air collision in Southern California
A Chicago-area skydiver was among two people killed after a mid-air collision Friday morning in Southern California.
Levi Pimentel, 29, of Aurora, was one of two women who died in the accident, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office. The second woman was identified as Georgia Jean, 56, from Box Elder, South Dakota.
The incident happened around noon PST Friday when Pimentel and Jean were about 150 feet from the ground as their parachutes became entangled, Skydive Elsinore, a skydiving company hosting the event where the incident happened, said in a statement.
Both women were taken to area hospitals where they were pronounced dead, officials said. There were no reports of malfunctioning equipment.
Pimentel and Jean were both licensed skydivers visiting for the event, according to Skydive Elsinore.
Pimentel has spent nearly nine years employed at iFly Indoor Skydiving in Naperville in various roles, including lead trainer, lead instructor and flight instructor, according to her LinkedIn page.
She previously worked as a skydiving instructor at Sky Nights SPC, based in East Troy, Wisconsin.
"Skydive Elsinore extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of both skydivers, and is grieving alongside all those affected," the company said in the statement.
