2 women die in head-on crash on River Road in St. John the Baptist Parish

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Two 75-year-old women died Friday (Nov. 6) after a car crossed into the other lane and hit a box truck head-on on Louisiana Highway 44, also called River Road, in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana State Police said.

One woman was from Vacherie. The other was from Garyville. Both died at the scene, near Marigold Street.

State police Troop B began investigating shortly before noon.

Investigators said a 2011 Toyota Corolla was heading west on Louisiana 44. A 2023 Freightliner box truck was heading east, approaching Marigold Street.

The Corolla crossed the center line into the eastbound lane and hit the box truck head-on, police said. Investigators are still working to learn why.

Both women in the Corolla were wearing seat belts. They died at the scene.

The box truck driver was also wearing a seat belt. The driver had minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Investigators do not believe driver impairment contributed to the crash. They collected routine toxicology samples for testing as part of the ongoing investigation.

The crash remains under investigation.
