Waterfowl hunting season in Georgia is slated to begin this month | Here are the details

Georgia’s main waterfowl hunting season begins Saturday, Nov. 21, following a special early hunting opportunity scheduled for Nov. 14-15 for youth, active-duty military and veterans, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division.

The statewide duck season will take place across two separate segments: Nov. 21-29 and Dec. 12 through Jan. 31. State wildlife officials structured the second segment to extend through the end of January to maximize late-season hunting opportunities.

Kara Nitschke, a migratory gamebird biologist, advised hunters to follow harvest reporting guidelines. “Be sure to consult the regulations, either online or in the popular guide, for species-specific daily bag limits. Always be sure to check whether you’ve harvested a banded bird and if so, report it to the USGS Bird Banding Lab,” Nitschke said.

During the early two-day weekend window on Nov. 14-15, eligible youth, active military and veterans are permitted to hunt designated migratory species, including ducks, Canada geese and mergansers.

Participating youth must be ages 15 or younger and accompanied by an adult who is at least 18 years old, though only the youth hunter may shoot.

Hunters participating in Georgia’s waterfowl season must possess three separate credentials: a Georgia hunting license, a Georgia migratory bird license and a federal duck stamp.

The Wildlife Resources Division provides these requirements together in a Waterfowl Hunter Package at GoOutdoorsGeorgia.com, which includes a plastic hard card license.

Complete migratory bird hunting regulations and bag limit details are available on the Georgia DNR’s website.
