Philadelphia boycott bike ride: Pro-Palestinian protest includes Philadelphia Jewish restaurant boycott near Rittenhouse Square, draws counterprotest

PHILADELPHIA -- A boycott targeting six Jewish-owned businesses in Philadelphia drew demonstrations and long lines of supporters Sunday, as protesters biked through the city in support of Palestinians.

The planned Boycott Bike Ride began and ended in Rittenhouse Square, with demonstrators making their way through city streets.

The boycott targeted six restaurants near Rittenhouse Square. A flyer posted to social media by organizers showed the names of the six Jewish-owned restaurants circled in red and crossed out.

Several groups organized the ride, led by Philly Bike On Your Left. Organizers wrote that they were showing solidarity with Palestinians, called the business owners Zionists and accused them of supporting Israel.

Meanwhile, supporters gathered outside some of the targeted businesses.

Long lines formed outside K'Far on South 19th Street, where David Elkins said he traveled from New York to show his support.

"Wednesday or so of this week, I think I saw something online, and my wife and little daughter drove out here and spent the night, and thought it would be nice to be part of it," said Elkins.

Allan Domb, owner of Schlesinger's Deli, described the response from the community.

"The community is really showing up in big way, it's really special. Really heartwarming to see all these people here," said Domb.

Long lines were also seen outside Goldie on the 1900 block of Sansom Street.

Michael Balaban, president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, said the response was intended to counter the boycott.

"The only way to push back at hate is to show love, that's what you're seeing here with this huge line back here," said Balaban.

Police worked to keep the two groups on opposite sides of the street, but clashes occurred, including at 18th and Walnut streets.

Action News witnessed at least one Palestinian supporter being taken into custody. Police said three arrests had been made during the protest.

In a statement, boycott organizers said they stand firmly against racism and oppression against all forms.

"The reason we are calling for a boycott of these businesses is because of their support for Israel."

Earlier in the week, Mayor Cherelle Parker said the Philadelphia Police Department would be prepared to maintain safety throughout Sunday's protest.

Parker, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and other state and local leaders condemned the protest.

Organizers say another boycott bike ride is planned for next Sunday.
