A 22-year-old man was critically injured early this morning after crashing the vehicle he was driving into the median on H-2 Freeway in Waipio, police said.
At about 5:55 a.m., the man was driving north on the freeway “when he struck the concrete median, causing the vehicle to lose its rear driver’s side tire, and further control,” according to the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division. The vehicle careened off the roadway, onto the grassy median and went airborne before stopping on the median.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services personnel treated the victim and took him to a hospital in critical condition.
Police said he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Speed appears to have contributed to the crash and it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors, according to HPD.
